But for all the excitement, there’s a reality check: most AI agents break the moment they’re asked to work with real-world APIs. That’s because behind every seemingly simple action lies a mess of auth, schemas, rate limits, and edge cases.

Agents don’t just need smarter prompts or bigger models.

They need infrastructure. And no, model context protocols (MCPs) are not enough to go the extra mile to production.

Here’s why AI agents should be built on top of a purpose built integrations platform.

Intent to action needs translation

AI agents “think” in human-like intents:

"Add this contact to our CRM."

But APIs don’t work like that. They require structured inputs in exactly the right format, wether it is field names, types, auth headers, query structure.

A good integrations platform acts as a translation layer between abstract intent and API-specific execution. It defines what’s possible, how to do it, and what data to send, without relying on the agent to guess the details.

Auth is a nightmare without abstraction

Each SaaS tool handles authentication differently. Some use OAuth 2.0, others use API keys. Some expire tokens in minutes, others never do.

When agents try to call APIs directly, auth becomes a point of repeated failure.

Worse, you often don’t even know why a call failed. Is the token expired? Wrong scope? Misconfigured redirect URI?

Why MCPs are not enough

Model context protocols (MCPs) are a promising step toward standardizing how agents interact with external systems. They define the “what” and “how” of an action in a way that’s model-readable. But on their own, MCPs are not a silver bullet.

They assume the existence of reliable, ready-to-use endpoints and a clean separation of concerns between agent reasoning and execution.

If you’ve read this far, you probably know that most APIs don’t conform to a neat spec. They’re messy, inconsistent, and full of exceptions.

Without a robust infrastructure layer to handle auth, schema translation, error handling, and retries, MCPs become fragile abstractions that crumble in production.

Building powerful AI agents is no longer just about prompt engineering. It’s about architecture.
